Mount Cozla constitutes a well-individualized relief unit within the municipality of Piatra Neamț, the city surrounding the mountain to the west, south and east, and to the north it is bordered by the commune of Gârcina.

The development of the city makes this typical example of a secular beech forest on Mount Cozla feel the „island effect”, many of the species that use the forest habitats here, risk remaining isolated, being affected by habitat fragmentation and the lack of connectivity.

These valuable forest habitats harbor a great diversity of species, with approximately 80 species of invertebrates of which 4 are protected, 11 species of amphibians protected, 6 species of reptiles protected, 55 species of birds of which 33 are protected and 26 of mammal species of which 19 are protected.

The forest ecosystems have already been affected by logging and are still threatened by the lack of a protection regime.

At the same time, Mount Cozla is particularly important from a geomorphological point of view, because within Mount Cozla there is a natural monument, unique in Romania at the point called „Trei Caldări”. The wind buckets on Cozla are carved in sandstone in the form of spherical excavations with an opening diameter between 0.80-0.90 m and a depth of 0.60-0.80 m. Unfortunately, this unique micro-relief in the Carpathians, it has already suffered some damage caused by locals and tourists and is still under threat, not being included in the list of protected natural areas.

Currently, there is the possibility to grow the natural potential of the area, through tourist activities based on the natural values here and the awareness of the importance of Mount Cozla, for the ecosystem services brought to the community.

Let us now mention just a few of the opportunities of Mount Cozla as a protected natural area:

  • The existence of a legal framework for protected natural areas;
  • Increasing the interest of locals and tourists for the Cozla Mountain area;
  • Existence of non-reimbursable funds for priority environmental projects;
  • Access to ecological education programs and actions;
  • The possibility of developing educational and touristic activities with mountain specifics: hiking trails, interactive themed trails, mountain bike trails, trail running trails, ski touring trails, areas set up for outdoor educational activities, areas set up with equipment for physical exercise, wildlife observatories and the like;
  • Creation of tourist routes accessible to the majority of visitors and routes for the interpretation of nature;
  • Existing infrastructure that can be reconverted (ski slope and buildings) into infrastructure for visiting the protected natural area;
  • Partnership with non-governmental organizations for the administration and development of the Cozla mountain area;
  • Environment suitable for setting up recreation points and picnics;
  • Development of the lower area of Mount Cozla in the Belle Époque style, following the plans of the initial development from the beginning of the 20th century and increasing the tourist attraction through thematic events;
  • Expansion and improvement of the tourist infrastructure network;
  • The interest of the population in the urban area for spending free time in nature;
  • Interest of organizations and companies for collaboration and financing of protected natural areas;
  • Concerns of the local administration for drawing up sustainable development programs;
  • The potential of declaring the area as an ecotourism destination or geopark.
Mount Cozla is a well-individualized relief unit within the municipality of Piatra Neamţ, the city is surrounding the mountain to the west, south and east, and to the north it is bordered by the commune of Gârcina. Due to the natural values identified here and the community's desire to preserve them, we proposed the establishment of an urban natural area.
